On Wednesday, January 15th, members of Hamilton City Council will hear a staff report on additional revenue tools, including a Municipal Land Transfer Tax (MLTT). This could add an additional $11,475 in taxes on a $750,000 home that buyers would have to pay for at closing.

You can help by:

  • Completing this petition and share it widely.
  • Telling your local ward councilor to say ‘NO’ to a Municipal Land Transfer Tax in Hamilton – ask your family, friends, and clients to send this template letter to their local council member.
  • Submitting a written delegation. Simply copy this template and email it to [email protected] before Noon on Tuesday.
  • Helping us ‘Fill the Chambers’ on Wednesday, January 15 at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall – we need every seat filled at City Hall to show our strong opposition to this double tax.
  • Sharing our social media posts and tag your local ward councilor.

On Wednesday, Council will also hear a delegation from Abacus Data, on opinion polling data commissioned by Cornerstone to gauge the public sentiment of on Hamilton’s housing market and a potential MLTT. Julie Sergi, Chair of Cornerstone, will also be delegating to Council to share what this double tax would do to average families and prospective homebuyers in the City of Hamilton.

For more details on the MLTT, check out Julie Sergi’s op-ed in the Hamilton Spectator.

We hope we can count on your support. If you’re able to attend Wednesday’s meeting at City Hall, please let us know by emailing: [email protected]
